Healing Isn’t Linear: What to Do When Growth Feels Like Grief

You’re doing the work. You’ve set boundaries. You’ve started using your voice. You’ve walked away from things that made you feel small.
And still — you feel stuck. Heavy. Exhausted. Lonely.
You wonder, “Am I going backward?” “Was this all for nothing?”
Let me be clear: You’re not failing. You’re grieving.
Healing is not a highlight reel.
It’s a spiral staircase.
Some days you’ll feel powerful. Some days you’ll cry over things you thought you’d already moved past. Some days you’ll want to go back just because back feels familiar.
This is normal. This is necessary. This is what it means to unlearn survival and relearn safety.
When growth feels like grief, do this:
1. Normalize your feelings. Regression doesn’t mean failure. It means you’re revisiting a wound with deeper awareness this time.
2. Validate your pain. The inner child who never got to be heard is still speaking. And she’s not asking for perfection — she’s asking for presence.
3. Practice self-compassion. You deserve the same care you give everyone else. Especially now. Especially when you feel unworthy of it.
4. Reach out for support. Healing happens when we stop pretending we don’t need help.
I wrote Mothered by Survival because so many women feel ashamed when healing starts to hurt. They think it means they’re broken. They think it means the boundaries “didn’t work.” They think it means they’re not strong enough.
But sometimes, strength looks like softness. It looks like slowing down. It looks like letting the tears fall instead of swallowing them for the fifth time this week.
This isn’t a relapse. This is a reckoning.
And you’re allowed to sit in it. You’re allowed to not have it all figured out. You’re allowed to be healing and hurting at the same time.
